How Much Time Does Residency Approval Usually Take?

May 2, 2026 /Posted byCaesar / 12 / 0

For families and business owners who are trying to relocate, understanding what is residence VISA in UAE is essential. However, understanding how much time is required for obtaining one is going to be extremely crucial.

The UAE is getting popular as there is an efficient and structured system that is designed to accommodate professionals, investors, property owners, and family members. While the exact processing time is known to vary from case to case, preparation of the documents properly can streamline the process.

Let us see more about the residence VISA and see how they are able to make a significant difference for the people.

Stages Involved in the Residence VISA Approval Process

The timeline for obtaining a residence VISA in the UAE involves multiple steps, which are as follows:

  • Entry Permit Issuance

The first step towards securing a residence VISA is obtaining an entry permit. The document is known to be essential for you to allow entry into the UAE legally and complete all the residence procedures smoothly. Employers, sponsors, or applicants (depending on the category) apply for the permit, and it takes around 2-5 working days.

The permit is usually released through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).

  • Medical Tests and Emirates ID Biometrics

After you arrive in the UAE with your entry permit, the next step will be to undergo a mandatory medical examination. There are several authorised centres where such tests are done for checking communicable diseases. Along this step, you need to register for your Emirates ID, which also involves submitting the biometric data.

However, both processes can be completed within a short span of around 2-3 working days if there are not many complications.

  • VISA Stamping and Final Approval

Once the medical results are clear, the Emirates ID registration becomes complete. The residence VISA application is submitted to the relevant immigration authority. Upon arrival, the VISA is stamped on the passport, which officially grants residency status.

This stage usually requires three to seven days, and depending on the workload, the process can be completed earlier as well. The VISA category and whether any additional security clearances are needed to be completed.

Factors That May Affect the Timeline

There are various factors that may affect the timeline, some of which are:

  • Golden VISA and Investor VISA may require more time than standard employment or family VISAs. There are some additional verification steps that may also be required.
  • Completeness of the documentation is also another significant factor, as if there is even one document missing, it may delay the entire process.
  • Public holidays may delay the processing times.
  • Volume of applications during a particular slot may also cause processing delays at the same time.
  • Security and background checks may also cause significant delays.

Final Words

After understanding what is residence VISA in UAE, you might want to streamline the application process. Through the GDRFA and ICP, these services can be streamlined, and this usually requires an additional charge. However, there is an eligibility criterion for accessing these services.

If you want to get a complete consultation for applying for the residence VISA in the UAE, contact Consulting.AE. They will help streamline the steps and will be there with you from the initial consultation stage to final registration.
