Save Gas, Save Money: 10 Practical Ways to Cut Your Energy Bills

August 19, 2025 /Posted byCaesar / 798 / 0

With energy prices climbing, many households are looking for ways to make every cubic metre of gas stretch further. The good news? You don’t need to live in a parka indoors to see a difference—small, smart changes can make your home warmer and your bills lower.

Here’s how to save gas without feeling like you’re compromising comfort.

1. Turn Your Thermostat Down a Notch

Just lowering your thermostat by 1°C can cut your heating bills by around £80 a year (for a typical home in rochester). You probably won’t even notice the difference in temperature—especially if you keep cosy with layers. If you’re unsure, it’s best to call a qualified Plumber Rochester homeowners trust to check things over.

2. Only Heat the Rooms You Use

If you have radiators in rooms you rarely use, turn them down or off. Close doors to keep warm air where you need it most.

3. Bleed Your Radiators

If your radiators have cold spots at the top, they might have trapped air, which makes your boiler work harder. Bleeding them once or twice a year keeps your heating system efficient.

4. Service Your Boiler

A well-maintained boiler runs more efficiently and can last longer. Annual servicing can also catch problems before they turn into expensive repairs.

5. Fit a Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats let you control your heating from your phone and programme it around your schedule—so you’re not heating an empty house. Always make sure any work on your boiler or gas appliances is carried out by someone listed on the Gas Safe Register. It’s the best way to keep your home safe and efficient.

6. Insulate, Insulate, Insulate

Heat loves to escape through walls, roofs, and draughty windows. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and even simple draught excluders around doors can make a huge difference.

7. Use Your Curtains Wisely

Open curtains during the day to let in free solar heat. Close them as soon as it gets dark to trap warmth inside. Thick, lined curtains work best.

8. Cook Efficiently

When boiling water, use the kettle (it’s usually faster and cheaper than the hob). Keep saucepan lids on to trap heat and cook food quicker. And batch cook when you can—warming up leftovers uses less energy than starting from scratch.

9. Take Shorter Showers

If you have a gas boiler for hot water, shaving even a couple of minutes off your shower time can save both water and gas.

10. Check Your Gas Tariff

You might be paying more than you need to. Compare tariffs from different suppliers or see if your current provider can offer a better deal.

Final Thought

Saving gas isn’t about sitting in the cold—it’s about making your home work smarter, keeping heat where you want it, and reducing waste. Even if prices go down, these habits will keep your bills lower and your home greener.
