SASSA Status Check on the App Store

The outbreak of COVID-19 created immense global challenges, shaking public health systems, livelihoods, and economies. In response to the regional escalating crisis of covid-19, the country like South African with aid of its government launched a targeted financial assistance program known as the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant also formerly known ad SRD R350. This initiative was rolled out to provide short-term relief for individuals left unemployed and without any source of income during the nationwide lockdowns.

Despite its broad reach, many applicants continue to seek clarity on how to track their application status using Sassa status check online platform. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about the SRD grant, eligibility criteria, and the various methods for checking your application progress.

What Is the SRD Grant?

Initiated by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in 2020, the SRD grant aimed to support adults who were jobless and did not receive any form of government assistance during the peak of the pandemic. This social grant was initially designed and set at R350 per month and served as a temporary cushion while the country coped with the several economic aftermath of COVID-19.

Due to persistent economic strain and rising unemployment in the country, the grant has been extended multiple times beyond its original scope, continuing to play a key role in alleviating financial hardship.

Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant?

To apply for the grant, individuals must meet the following conditions:

  • Must be a South African citizen, legal permanent resident, or registered refugee.
  • Must fall between the ages of 18 and 59.
  • Should be unemployed.
  • Must not be receiving any financial support, such as UIF, NSFAS, or other social grants.

Ways to Check Your SRD Grant Status

There are three primary ways to monitor the status of your application:

  • Click Submit or check now button to view your current application status.

2. WhatsApp

  • Send a message to 082 046 8553.
  • Follow the WhatsApp automated reply prompts to verify your identity.
  • Provide your government ID and registered phone number when asked.

3. USSD Code (No Internet Needed)

  • Dial *134*7737# on your phone.
  • Navigate through the menu to check your application status.

What Your Status Means

When you check your SRD application, you may see one of the following updates:

  • Pending: Your application is being reviewed.
  • Approved: Your grant is confirmed; payment is scheduled.
  • Declined: Your request was denied. A reason is typically provided.
  • Reapplication Required: You need to reapply due to changes in eligibility or policy.

How to Appeal a Declined Application

If you feel your application was wrongly rejected or you think its rejected due to any uncertain reason which was not true, SASSA allows for an appeal process:

  • Visit the official SRD site and click the “Appeal” button in your portal option.
  • Submit an appeal for the specific month in question.
  • Upload any requested documents and explain why the decision should be reconsidered.

Note: Appeals must be lodged within 30 days of receiving a rejection notice, to know more about appeal in extra detail click here.

Final Words

The SRD grant has provided essential relief to millions of South Africans during one of the most challenging periods in recent history. While the application process can sometimes feel overwhelming, understanding how it works and staying updated on your application status ensures that you don’t miss out on the support you may be entitled to.

Even as the country recovers, the need for targeted social assistance remains high. Tools like the SRD grant are critical in helping individuals regain stability and rebuild their lives.
