Are Gas Boilers Being Phased Out?

January 10, 2025 /Posted byCaesar / 791 / 0

Gas boilers are a major cause of carbon emissions due to residential heating. Thus, the government is trying to phase out them. However, UK homes have a major reliance on gas boilers for heating. The Government can not put an immediate ban, rather they are trying to phase them out slowly.

But, you do not need to worry about this. Already built homes or properties we are already residing in will not be affected by this legislation. According to future home standards, homes that are built in 2025 will need to install alternate heating systems to gas boilers.

Consider replacing your existing gas boiler with a new energy-efficient one to reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint. Check out whatprice.co.uk for the best deals and comparisons on boiler replacements.

Do I Need to Replace My Gas Boiler After Ban?

No, until it’s inefficient and does not heat your home. There is no legislation to compel you to replace your gas boiler even after 2025. If your boiler is relatively new and does the job efficiently, you do not need to replace or get rid of it.

The Future Home Standards require the properties built in or after 2025 to use renewable energy sources like heat pumps for heating purposes. So, the thing you need to understand is that no ban is imposed or planned on gas boilers already installed in the homes we live in.

While the news of phasing out gas boilers is true, this doesn’t mean you need to replace your boiler. This will start with banning the new installations in new homes. While the existing boilers can be used or replaced as per needs.

How Gas Boilers Will be Phased Out Gradually?

Well, the plan is to gradually reduce the installation of gas boilers in UK homes. For this purpose, the newly built homes are required to install alternatives. Plus, the boilers that are being replaced are required to be of condensing type so less CO2 emissions are produced.

The incentives provided by the government also install efficient boilers or renewable energy heating systems. This includes heat pumps and electric heating systems. Schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and ECO4 Scheme are providing partial and complete funding to install renewable energy heating systems.

The government aims to reduce gas boiler installations by 80% by 2035 and accelerate towards net zero emissions. They might not be able to wipe out them entirely even beyond 2050.

What are Alternative Heating Systems to Gas Boilers?

As we know, gas boilers are widely used heating systems in UK households. With the rising prices of fossil fuels and the latest legislation, the transition towards alternatives has picked the pace. While you are not legally obliged to replace your existing gas boiler, you should replace it if it’s no longer energy-efficient. If you see rising energy bills and the boiler age has completed, you can think of alternatives.

  1. Biomass Boiler Systems: Biomass boilers can be carbon-neutral if combined with good forestry management. The biomass materials only emit carbon dioxide stored by the plants and can be a good alternative to gas boilers.
  2. Air Source Heat Pumps: ASHPs extract the heat from outdoor air, compress it, and provide heating to indoors. As these heat pumps use electricity and renewable energy sources, they are good low-carbon alternatives to gas boilers. Be mindful of ASHPs reducing performance in nippy weather.
  3. Ground Source Heat Pumps: These heat pumps provide consistent heating and hot water to your central heating system. They extract heat from the earth, compress it to raise the temperature, and make your home warmer. Geothermal heat pumps are a good alternative to gas boilers as they use renewable energy sources and emit less carbon dioxide.
  4. Solar Thermal Panels: As compared to solar photovoltaic panels, solar thermal panels transfer generated heat to hot water. That hot water is then used for domestic water requirements.

These alternatives produce less greenhouse gases and provide low-cost heating and hot water as per your requirements.

How Much Gas Boiler Alternatives Cost?

Alternative heating systems to gas boilers can be a costly decision as renewable energy healing systems are expensive to install. However, these systems can save big on energy bills in the long run. The table below compares installation and system costs for gas boiler alternatives.

Heating SystemCost Range
Biomass Boiler£4,000 – £21,000
Air Source Heat Pump£7,000 – £18,000
Ground Source Heat Pump£16,000 – £35,000
Solar Thermal Panels£3,000 – £8,000

When Should I Replace My Gas Boiler?

The decision to replace your gas boiler should be solely based on its performance and your requirements. If you notice your boiler has become inefficient, generates less heating, and costs more energy bills, you should consider replacing it with some energy-efficient counterpart.

However, if your boiler lifespan is not completed and it’s still showing these signs, you should consult some professional. Experts can better detect and resolve issues that cause inefficiency and higher energy costs. They can also make recommendations on whether or not you should replace your gas boiler.

But listen your decision to replace the boiler should never be intimidated by ban news by the government. Because it’s never going to happen any sooner. Yet, if your boiler has reached the lifespan and you want to replace it, considering a low-carbon option can be a wise decision.

Final Thoughts

To wrap this article up, the government is trying to phase out gas boilers gradually via different strategies. They have banned the installation of gas boilers in houses built in 2025. The government has been providing various incentives to set off higher upfront costs of renewable energy heating systems to increase their adoption.

You should not worry about replacing your gas boiler unless it’s causing problems. Because this ban does not apply to existing households. If you still want to replace them, you can consider government incentives like free boiler grants available to eligible households.
