ZYN vs VELO: Which Nicotine Pouch Is Better for You in the UK?

October 13, 2026 /Posted byCaesar / 88 / 0

ZYN vs VELO comes down to one question before any other: do you want the gentlest start on the shelf or the widest choice of strengths and flavours? ZYN wins the first, with a 1.5mg Mini that no other brand sells in Britain and a per-pouch label that means exactly what it says. VELO wins the second, with twenty-one flavours, six strength rungs up to 17mg and a moister pouch that gets going faster. Scored over nine rounds below, VELO takes four, ZYN takes three, and two are draws. Which brand is better for you depends on which rounds you care about.

A quick word on why a home-and-lifestyle site is wading into tins. Nicotine pouches have gone from a Scandinavian curiosity to the thing rattling in the cup holder, and the two names most people are weighing against each other are the two owned by the biggest tobacco companies on earth: ZYN (Swedish Match, part of Philip Morris International since 2022) and VELO (British American Tobacco). Both are small white pouches, no tobacco leaf, that sit under the top lip for twenty to forty-five minutes. Nothing is lit, nothing is inhaled, nothing needs spitting. The differences are in the detail, and the detail is the whole argument.

Two things before the bell. Nicotine is addictive, and both brands are adult products for people aged 18 and over who already use nicotine. If you don’t, neither tin is a hobby worth starting. And from 29 October 2026 the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 makes it a statutory offence to sell any nicotine pouch to anyone under 18 anywhere in the UK, with £200 fixed penalties for the shop that gets it wrong. The age limit has been retail practice for years. Now it has teeth.

Round 1: Strength Range (VELO)

VELO runs from 1 dot to 6 dots: 4mg, 6mg, 8mg or 10mg, 11mg, 14mg and 17mg of nicotine per pouch, grouped on the can as Mellow (1 to 2 dots), Original (3 to 4) and Intense (5 to 6). Most UK shops stock two dots upward, so the practical range is 6mg to 17mg.

ZYN runs lower and stops sooner. The dry Minis come in at 1.5mg, 3mg and 6mg; the moist Regulars at 9mg, 11mg, 12.5mg and 13.5mg. ZYN’s own UK shop lists a 16.5mg Max, but most retailers top out at 13.5mg.

So VELO covers more ground at the top and ZYN covers more at the bottom. On pure range, VELO edges it: six rungs you can actually buy against ZYN’s seven strengths split across two formats, and a 17mg ceiling nobody at ZYN matches in a normal shop. If 14mg and 17mg mean nothing to you, skip to Round 2, because the next round is ZYN’s.

Round 2: Gentlest Start (ZYN)

Not close. ZYN’s 1.5mg X-Low Mini (Cool Mint, Spearmint, Black Cherry) is the only can at that strength on sale in Britain, and its 3mg Minis are the next rung up. VELO’s lowest rung, the 4mg one-dot, is rarely stocked, so a VELO beginner usually starts at 6mg, which is four times ZYN’s floor.

If you are curious rather than committed, or you vape a 10mg pod kit and want something lighter for the office, ZYN is the only brand with a real on-ramp. Start at 1.5mg or 3mg, keep it in for ten minutes, see how you feel. A first pouch at 6mg is a tingle; a first pouch at 11mg on an empty stomach is a sit-down.

Round 3: Reading the Lid (ZYN, narrowly)

Both brands print milligrams per pouch, which is rarer than it sounds. Several strong Polish and Danish brands print milligrams per gram of pouch material instead, so their headline number overstates the real dose by roughly a third. ZYN and VELO both tell you the truth on the tin.

The difference is in the dots. ZYN prints the milligrams and a dot row, and the two agree. VELO prints a dot row too, but three dots can mean 8mg or 10mg depending on the flavour: Bright Spearmint, Purple Grape and Lime Flame come in at 8mg, while Crispy Peppermint, Tropical Ice and most of the fruit-and-ice cans sit at 10mg. Same glyph, two doses. If one three-dot VELO has ever felt firmer than another, that is why. Four dots carries a smaller quirk: older cans print 10.9mg, newer ones round it to 11mg. Same pouch.

Read the number, not the dots, on both brands. ZYN takes the round because its label never needs a footnote.

Round 4: Pouch Size and Feel (Draw)

This is the round most comparisons skip and most people actually decide on. ZYN’s Minis are small and dry: they almost disappear under the lip, release slowly, and suit anyone who wants to forget the thing is there. ZYN’s Regulars are moist and closer to a standard slim pouch. VELO sells one format in the UK, a Slim, with a little more moisture than a ZYN Mini, so the flavour and the nicotine arrive sooner and the pouch feels like it is doing something inside a minute or two.

Which is better is personal. A dry Mini is the discreet pick for a desk, a dinner or a long drive; a moist Slim is the pick when you want the first few minutes to count. The ranges themselves are the real tell: twenty-two ZYN pouches listed in the UK across both formats, against twenty-one VELO pouches in one format at every strength from two dots to six. Both ship twenty pouches to a can, except ZYN’s 1.5mg X-Low, which holds ten. Draw.

Round 5: Flavours (VELO)

VELO’s shelf is wider and fruitier. Alongside four mints (Crispy Peppermint, Freezing Peppermint, Bright Spearmint, Peppermint Storm) it runs Tropical Ice, Ruby Berry, Purple Grape, Icy Berries, Lime Flame, Tropical Mango, Cherry Ice and a dozen more, most of them with an ice edge. If you want fruit with a cold finish, VELO has more of it than any brand in Britain.

ZYN’s range is shorter and plainer, and that is a feature for some people. Cool Mint, Spearmint, Citrus, Black Cherry, Espressino, Gentle Mint, Bellini and a handful of EU-range cans. The flavours sit lower in the mix and the mints read as mint rather than as sweets. Nobody buys ZYN for the fruit. People buy it because it tastes like something a grown-up chose.

VELO wins on count and on the fruit shelf. ZYN wins if “subtle” is the brief. Round to VELO.

Round 6: Price Per Can (VELO, by pennies)

Supermarket prices for both brands sit around £6.50 a can. Online is where the gap opens, and the gap is small. At NicotineBuzz, ZYN is sold in packs: 5 cans for £19.99, which is £4.00 a can, falling to £2.99 a can on larger multibuys. VELO is sold by the single can at £4.19, any 5 for £19.95 (£3.99 a can), and down to £2.85 a can at 40.

Best multibuy rate£2.99 a can£2.85 a can

Prices as listed at NicotineBuzz in October 2026 and include VAT. VELO takes the round by a few pence at every rung and by the fact that you can buy one can to try it. Don’t let the pennies decide: a can you don’t finish is the expensive one.

Round 7: Finding It on a Shelf (VELO)

VELO was the most popular brand on Haypp and Northerner, Europe’s two largest pouch retailers, for the third year running in 2025, and it is the tin you will find behind the counter at Tesco, the garage and the corner shop. ZYN is the biggest nicotine pouch brand in the world by Swedish Match’s own shipment figures, but in the UK it is more of an online purchase. Convenience round to VELO.

Round 8: Who Makes It and How Long They Have (ZYN)

ZYN was designed in Sweden by Swedish Match, has been on sale in the UK since 2019, and became part of Philip Morris International in 2022. VELO’s pouch started life in Sweden too, as Epok, an all-white snus, became LYFT once the tobacco leaf came out, and took the VELO name in the UK in January 2022. BAT redrew the cans with the dot system in January 2024. Nothing inside changed; only the label did, which is why an old “Strong” tin and a new three-dot tin can sit side by side and be the same pouch.

Both are serious products from serious manufacturers. ZYN takes the round on a longer unbroken run under one name, which matters when you want the can you buy next year to be the can you bought this year.

Round 9: The Rules (Draw)

Both are legal to buy and use in the UK as of October 2026. Both contain no tobacco leaf, which is the exact reason they can sit on a British shelf while traditional Swedish snus has been banned from sale here since 1992. A great many people still type “zyn snus” and “velo snus” into a search bar, and the shops have stopped correcting them.

From 29 October 2026 the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 puts both brands under the same statutory rules: no sale to under-18s, no proxy purchases on their behalf, no consumer vending machines, no free samples or token-price promotions. Ministers also hold powers over flavours, packaging and retail display, with the detail still to be consulted on. Whatever arrives will land on ZYN and VELO equally. Draw.

VELO four, ZYN three, two draws. Here is the honest translation. If you have never used a pouch, or you want the lightest possible can, buy ZYN. If you already know you want 10mg or more, or you want fruit, or you want to pick up a tin on the way home, buy VELO. If you are an ex-smoker on twenty a day looking for the strongest thing either makes, VELO’s six-dot 17mg is the answer and ZYN’s 13.5mg isn’t it.

When Not to Buy Either

Not if you don’t already use nicotine. Not if you are under 18, which from 29 October is the law as well as the policy. Not if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. And not a 14mg or 17mg VELO, or an 11mg-plus ZYN Regular, as a first pouch: a strong pouch on an empty stomach produces hiccups, a queasy half-hour and a lifelong grudge against a brand that did nothing wrong. Start low. Eat first. Keep the first one in for ten minutes.

One more: don’t buy either brand “to try a flavour” in a 10-can pack. Both are sold in fives online. Five is enough to know.

ZYN vs VELO: Questions People Ask

Is ZYN or VELO stronger?

VELO. Its six-dot cans are 17mg per pouch against 13.5mg for the strongest ZYN most UK shops sell. At the other end, ZYN’s 1.5mg Mini is the weakest pouch sold in Britain, so ZYN has the lowest floor and VELO the highest ceiling.

Which is better for beginners, ZYN or VELO?

ZYN, because of the 1.5mg and 3mg Minis. VELO’s usual starting rung is the two-dot 6mg, which is a fair start for a vaper on 10mg to 20mg salts but a big first step for anyone else.

Are ZYN and VELO the same price?

Near enough. Online in October 2026, ZYN is 5 cans for £19.99 (£4.00 a can) and VELO is 5 for £19.95 (£3.99 a can), with VELO also sold singly at £4.19. Both drop below £3.00 a can on larger mixed orders.

Is a 3-dot VELO 8mg or 10mg?

Either, depending on the flavour. Bright Spearmint, Purple Grape and Lime Flame are 8mg; Crispy Peppermint, Tropical Ice and most fruit-and-ice cans are 10mg. The milligrams printed on the can are the real answer.

What is the difference between ZYN Mini and ZYN Regular?

Mini pouches are smaller and dry, come at 1.5mg, 3mg and 6mg, and release slowly. Regular pouches are larger and moist, come at 9mg to 13.5mg, and release faster. VELO’s UK range is one Slim format at every strength.

Do ZYN and VELO contain tobacco?

No tobacco leaf in either. The nicotine is extracted from the tobacco plant, which is why the cans carry the standard nicotine warning, but there is no leaf, no cutting and no spitting. That absence is the legal basis for both being on sale in the UK.

Is it ZYN snus or VELO snus?

Neither is snus, strictly. Snus is a Swedish product containing ground tobacco leaf, banned from sale in the UK since 1992. “ZYN snus” and “VELO snus” are simply what a lot of people call tobacco-free pouches, and both brands are legal here precisely because they are not snus.

What changes for nicotine pouches on 29 October 2026?

Sale to anyone under 18 becomes a criminal offence across the UK, as does buying on behalf of an under-18. Consumer vending machines, free samples and token-price promotions are banned on the same day. Both ZYN and VELO stay legal for adults.

Nicotine pouches contain nicotine, which is addictive. For adults aged 18 and over only. Prices and range correct as of October 2026.
